Comics are widely studied by academics in the humanities. Discourse around metaphors and messaging found in the superhero genre is abundant, while comic narratives on the topic of illness and health are clear in movements such as “Graphic Medicine,” a term coined to aggregate stories at “the intersection between the medium of comics and the discourse of healthcare.”
Unfortunately, the same richness of inquiry is not found within the niche genre of diary comics, and any analysis of diary comics is usually discussed under the umbrella terms of autobiography, graphic medicine, or as comics more broadly.
