Here’s a sequence from the GN where I’ve decided to use a song to lend a bit of continuity and to try to convey the atmosphere that, yes, this is a live music venue and yes, there is music playing. I don’t know what the copyright laws are on using text from a song in a comic. I should probably look it up before Ben Lee sues me. While I’m sure there must be a variety of ways in which you can show music in comics, I like this method. There is a funny thing that happens with the addition of lyrics to images where extra meaning occurs in places I hadn’t intended. A kind of synchronicity, that speaks to the beauty of the medium and of the inherent human ability to spot patterns. Text and images, working interdependently. Love it.
