Here I wanted to show Ronja pausing mid-stride, stopped by a sudden decision to confide in Clint. As an author, I’ve given myself quite a few limitations. One is avoiding the use of thought bubbles (unless I think they add to the meaning of the scene), and another is that narration is   forbidden, not counting excerpts of diary entries that begin and end chapters. The rest should be able to be conveyed by the acting of the characters.

It means I have to draw a lot more panels. Totally worth it.
