I’ve been drawing my protagonist so often without looking at reference that his face is often looking (unintentionally) different from page to page. One of the great things about using digital methods for laying out pages is the ability to import images to trace over, or to use as reference. Case in point- importing a photo straight from photo booth and drawing over the top. In the final draft I’ll have to make the choice of whether to keep this face as it is, with the knowledge that it clashes with the rather simple style of the rest, or whether to simplify the features to blend in. Perhaps, for key moments, a somewhat realistic drawing services the story; I’ll just have to be careful not to indulge too often, lest my visual ‘style’ clash with the overly referenced faces and details. Of course, the use of photo reference as an occasional checkup on proportions is probably a good idea if for nothing else than as a way to get back ‘on-model’.
